Jim - On The Road Again - The Polings

Hello to all FUHS class of '65ers and other interested parties:

My wife, Joan, and I have been on the road again - this time to Boise, Idaho and surrounding areas. We had the great pleasure of 'breaking bread' with Carmen and Margaret (Knox) Poling and their family on the evening of June 5 at their home in Boise. As one of their 7 kids, Merritt, had graduated high school the day before, there were some other folks visiting as well - fellow FUHS grads Julie (Poling) Johnson, and her husband Bob Johnson - both class of '66. Carmen and Julie's Mother, aged 90, was there, too. So we had quite a large table to gather around.

We would surely welcome visits by any FUHS '65ers to San Diego - even if you just live a few miles away.

Hello (again) to the FUHS '65 group. I posted an e-mail on our list a month or so ago, mentioning that my wife, Joan, and I would be visiting Lynn Dold in Wichita, KS. Lynn was with 'us' for 6th, 7th, and 8th grades - and he was a very close friend of mine (see photo).

Well, we had a truly great visit - Lynn showed us around Wichita - where he had grown up, and where he wrote most of his books (do a Google on 'Gaylord Dold' and you'll be amazed). Then we met up with his friend Carol and the four of us had a very nice dinner in the Old Town section of Wichita (see photo).

Lynn and Carol then set us up for our itinerary the next day - to maximize our time in, and acquaintance with, the Flint Hills and what's left of open prairie in Kansas. Even though our touristing weather wasn't too good, we enjoyed the day nonetheless.

It's truly wonderful to have this network of FUHS '65 folks sprinkled around here and there!

Margaret and Carmen - you're next - we're coming to Boise in late May.

I posted a note on this list about a month ago, mentioning that my wife, Joan, and I would be in Branson, MO in mid-April for a week. "Out of the blue," an e-mail came from Vicky (Hallstead) Strattard who said something like"Hey, my husband and I live in Branson, come visit." Vicky was in the FUHS class of '60, but she has some relatives who were in our class ('65). She lived in Fallbrook for over 50 years, and her hubby, Ted, retired from the Fallbrook Fire Dept. a while back. Perhaps some of you remember him as well.

Anywho, we visited Vicky and Ted at their lovely home on the south shore of Table Rock Lake, a few miles from Branson. A photo is attached of me, Vicky, and Ted in their living room. Ted also has a really 'hot' Ford pickup from the '50s!

Vicky, thanks to you and Ted for the hospitality, and it seems that any FUHS alumni who visit the Branson area would be welcome in their home.

There are several people interested in the showing of this film on the 29th. I will be driving up to Oceanside tomorrow to scout out a good coffee shop, or restaurant near the Public Library, so that we can park our cars and meet before the film for a cup of coffee, or tea, and then walk to the Library together.
The film start time is 7PM. I will be at the location from 5:30, until we walk over. My cell phone number is 619 218 2929 if you get lost, or need last minute directions. This page will be updated tomorrow evening with the exact meeting location.

If there is any child of the Military that you would like me to research, let me know, and I will ask about them at the meeting afterwards. — Jack

All - we did it! We made it down and up the Grand Canyon. We went with a group who had signed up with the San Diego Natural History Museum - 17 of us and 2 guides. We hiked down the South Kaibab trail on May 1 (the 'A' pictures), we stayed at Phantom Ranch at the bottom for two nights (the 'B' pictures), and then we hiked up the Bright Angel Trail on May 3 (the 'C' pictures). It was a great experience, but we had to work for it!

So, at first blush it sounds crazy. A Fallbrook High School reunion in Hawaii?

Well, Alan & Diana Serry own a lovely home on the north shore of the Big Island (a.k.a. Hawaii), and there's a couple of towns and a place to stay nearby. So, why not?

Joan and I recently visited the Big Island, and we made it a point to check out the north end of the island, known locally as Kohala because of the name given to the extinct volcano that formed this part of the island. It was, in fact, the first volcano on Hawaii. Alan & Diana's house is located in the small town of Kapa'au, about 2 miles east of Hawi (pronounced Hah-Vee). Hawi has several good and "funky" restaurants, and the local place to stay ... the Kohala Village Inn (www.kohalavillageinn.com). It's a decent, but not fancy, motel ... and would be a great place for us all to stay. The manager at the Inn told us that the owner of the Inn will soon be opening a B&B nearby as well, so that will increase the options.

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!

Joan and I are "playing tourist" out here for a few days.

Following excellent guidance from Alan and Diana Serry, we checked out the northern coast where they have suggested we have our 45th reunion in 2010. We looked at the hotel, the Kohala Village Inn, www.kohalavillageinn.com It will be fine - not fancy, but fine. We drove by Alan and Diana's house. Checked out the charming towns of Hawi and Kapa'au. This is a relatively unspoiled piece of Hawaii, but it's only an hour away from Kailua-Kona if some attendees have a "need" for fancier digs, nightlife, mega-shopping, etc.

So - should we decide on a date in 2010, get it on people's calendars, and start the process now? - Jim Price & Joan Sieber

This is the schedule for the class of 1965's reunion for the weekend, September 16-18, 2005. One thing to remember is Sunday, at the Picnic, anyone could show up, there has never been a need to register for the Picnic, just get there! — Jack

Friday:
3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - Early Bird Registration, Elephant and Castle restaurant, Holiday Inn main lobby
6 to 9 p.m. - Welcome Reception, Port Hole Room, poolside, Holiday Inn

Saturday:
10 a.m. to 6 p.m. - "Meet and Greet" area in the Elephant and Castle restaurant
7 to 10 p.m. - Dinner Cruise, San Diego Harbor Excursion

Sunday:
12 Noon - Picnic at Live Oak Park, Picnic Area "D" adjacent to Parking Lot #2 on Reche Road (NOT the main parking lot)
Parking is $2 per car.
Bring your own everything. Locals, please bring food to share.

In preparation for the 40th reunion of the Fallbrook High School class of '65, we heard from many class members - primarily via e-mail, and the excellent server set up by Jack Foster Mancilla (FUHS '64). And the whole business was hosted on Jack's server, and George Ward's server was the location for all the Reunion registration pages. Thanks immensely to Jack and George; this infrastructure allowed a deluge of discussion - memories of Fallbrook, memories of High School, networking with other class mates, former faculty, those who graduated in other years, and so on.

I've compiled here, and thanks to Linda (Lowe) deGraaf for the assistance on this, many of the tidbits we received from class members and kindred sprits during the past few months.David Samuels provided the then photos for all of us. For simplicity I've alphabetized the whole thing by last name during high school days.There's lots of material on some people, little on others. But we did hear from lots of people: and here's the scoop.
